Functional and Evolutionary Microbial Ecology for Sustainable Agrosystems

Microorganisms play an important role in several key terrestrial ecosystem services, including filtering, nutrient cycling, climate regulation and food production. Agricultural practices can have strong impacts on the diversity, abundance and activity of soil microbial communities with consequences on soil properties and functions, which can then affect the provision of ecosystemic services. However, in a context of climate change, a comprehensive understanding of the consequences of these practices on soil microbial communities is still lacking, thus limiting the possibilities to use microorganisms in soil protection and agricultural management strategies for promoting ecosystem functions.

The overall research objective of the group is to better understand the ecology and evolution of microbial guilds involved in key functions underpinning agro-ecosystem services and to implement this knowledge into agro-ecological practices to preserve soil and promote ecosystemic services they support. These objectives are built upon the following three priority axes:

1- Understanding of the role of soil biodiversity, biotic and abiotic interactions, including interactions between macroorganisms (plants and fauna) and microorganisms, in ecosystem services;

2- Monitoring and evaluating the impact of agro-ecosystem management strategies on soil microbial communities and related soil functions, to promote ecosystem multifunctionality;

3- Identifying ecological engineering options to improve the sustainability of agro-ecosystems, for example via the artificial selection of microbial communities.


For this purpose, the team focuses on (i) supporting services such as cycling of the nutrient nitrogen and primary production; (ii) regulatory services such as soil purification (biodegradation of pesticides and of antibiotics), climate regulation (mitigation of greenhouse gas emissions), and (iii) provisioning services such as crop production.
