The interest of legumes for agroecology
This plant family have many qualities and assets for agriculture which makes it a good choice in agroecology
(reduction of farm inputs; turn of crops; human and animal food)

Legumes (with pea, faba bean, soy, lupin, alfalfa, clover …) are a plant family which has capacity to develop symbiosis with their roots and soil microorganisms. This association made by these plants in nodules with bacteria like rhizobium allow them to use the atmospheric nitrogen and by that they avoid the use of nitrogen fertilizer for their development.

 Their arbuscular mycorrhizae association with soil fungi make easier water and nutrient (especially phosphorus) acquisition and participate to the protection of the plant against pathogenic roots.  The use of legumes in turn of crops or species association can limit farm inputs.

Their use limits the propagation of adventitious flora, gives a rich soil and is a growth enabler for innovatives agricultures systems. Moreover their abundance in proteins provide them an interest for human and animal food.

Agroecology Joint Research Unit is a references’ center in this domain and its projects like PeaMUST in the framework of national funds (Investissements d’Avenir) or the european project LEGATO aim to select new species with a higher and more stable efficiency and capable to optimize the functioning of symbiosis with soil microorganisms. The issue is to make them economically competitive face to big agricultural cultures in order to increase their grown areas.

In Burgundy there is a strong research dynamic in the area of vegetal proteins and their value constitute a potential source of sustainable development for Burgundy. The INRA in Dijon is committed with the Regional Council in a framework for and on the regional development characterize by several objectives: build networks of actors belong to different sectors which bring new organizational methods and are source of regional dynamics. Detect innovations and have a mutual evaluation between actors according economic, environmental and biotechnical criteria.  Develop communication based on results and shared references and offer a value of developed results by the sectors.
