Activités de Recherche | Je m’intéresse à la relation entre variation génétique et variation du phénotype qui en découle. Mon objectif est d’élucider les bases génétiques de traits fonctionnels permettant la survie des adventices dans les parcelles agricoles, et de comprendre les processus évolutifs permettant la sélection de ces traits. Ma recherche se concentre essentiellement sur la compréhension des modalités de la sélection et de l’évolution d’un trait fonctionnel majeur : la résistance aux herbicides. Mon but appliqué est de contribue à l’optimisation du contrôle des adventices (« mauvaises herbes ») en agriculture. Dans un contexte de crise alimentaire mondiale, le maintien d’une agriculture intensive est crucial pour les décennies à venir. Les herbicides sont le moyen le plus efficace jamais inventé pour le contrôle de la démographie des adventice. De ce fait, et faute de solutions de remplacement satisfaisantes, les herbicides resteront encore longtemps un support indispensable de l’agriculture conventionnelle. Il est par conséquent vital de préserver leur efficacité aussi longtemps que possible, mais aussi d’optimiser leur utilisation afin de limiter le plus possible les dégâts collatéraux des traitements herbicides sur l’environnement. Parce que les adventices s’adaptent à la pression de sélection exercée par les herbicides, la sélection de résistances est inévitable. Ces résistances causent des dégâts au niveau de l’agriculteur (pertes de récolte) comme de l’environnement (applications d’herbicides inutiles car n’ayant que peu ou pas d’efficacité contre des adventices résistantes ; ré-application pour tenter de détruire les plantes résistantes). Pour contrecarrer le développement de résistances et maximiser l’efficience des traitement herbicides, il faut comprendre comment les résistances évoluent. Ceci implique d’identifier les gènes gouvernant les résistances, et de comprendre comment ces gènes sont sélectionnés et se propagent dans et entre les populations d’adventices. L’essence de la résistance aux herbicides ne peut être saisie que grâce à une approche de biologie évolutive, qui englobe des niveaux d’organisation emboîtés. Par conséquent, je travail aux niveaux du gène, de la plante individuelle, des populations d’adventices présentes dans un paysage agricole, et même de l’aire de répartition de l’espèce. À travers des collaborations locales, nationales et internationales, mes études font appel à la biologie, la biologie moléculaire, la biochimie, la génétique des populations, l’écologie et l’agronomie. Les espèces auxquelles je m’intéresse principalement sont le Vulpin des champ (Alopecurus myosuroides Huds.), l’Ivraie (Lolium sp.) et le Coquelicot (Papaver rhoeasL.), trois adventices majeures des cultures d’hiver en Europe. Mon axe de recherche principal actuel est l’identification des bases génétiques de la résistance aux herbicides non liées à la cible de l’herbicide. (métabolisation exacerbée de l’herbicide et tous autres mécanismes n’impliquant pas des modifications de la cible des herbicides). Ce type de résistance fait partie de la réponse des plantes aux stresses. Il est très répandu, et représente un obstacle à l’utilisation efficiente des herbicides, puisqu’il confère des résistances imprévisible à des herbicides ayant des modes d’action différents. On ne sait actuellement pratiquement rien sur les gènes impliqués, et il n’existe pas de test de diagnostic simple. Espèces étudiées : Vulpin, Ivraies Herbicides considérés : inhibiteurs de l’acétolactate-synthase (ALS), inhibiteurs de l’acétyl-CoA carboxylase (ACCase). Approches : biologie (tests de sensibilité, études de la ségrégation de la résistance dans des croisements contrôlés), biologie moléculaire (transcriptomioque, séquençage de nouvelle génération). Un autre axe de recherches sur lequel je suis actif en ce moment concerne la caractérisation précise de la résistance de cible aux inhibiteurs de l’ALS. Espèces étudiées : Vulpin, Coquelicot.
